Key Feng Shui Desk Principles
Feng Shui (literally “wind-water”) is about balancing energy in your environment. For your desk, this means positioning, decluttering, and adding elements that promote positive energy. Below are the core principles to apply immediately.
1. Commanding Position
Place your desk diagonally opposite the door, with a solid wall behind you. This gives you a view of the entrance and a sense of security. Avoid sitting with your back to the door.
Tip: If you can't move your desk, use a mirror to see the door behind you.
2. Clear the Clutter
Clutter blocks energy flow. Keep only essential items on your desk. Use organizers, trays, and drawer dividers to keep things tidy. A clean desk attracts positive chi.
Consider using desk organizers or drawer organizers for a cleaner surface.
3. Balanced Elements
Incorporate the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Wood (plants) for growth, Fire (lighting) for energy, Earth (ceramics) for stability, Metal (metal frames) for clarity, and Water (a small fountain or black/blue colors) for wisdom.
4. Proper Desk Shape
A rectangular or curved desk is ideal. Avoid sharp corners pointing at you (poison arrows). If you have an L-shaped or corner desk, ensure you sit in the “power spot” facing the door.
Explore different desk shapes to find the best fit.
5. Monitor & Screen Placement
Position your monitor directly in front of you, about an arm's length away. The top of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level. Avoid placing screens in the “conflict” area (directly facing a door or window).
See our Monitor Placement Guide for ergonomic tips.
6. Add Life & Inspiration
Bring in plants, a small water feature, or meaningful objects (like a vision board or inspiring quote). These elements keep energy alive and motivate you.

Using the Bagua Map for Your Desk
The Bagua map is a Feng Shui energy map. Overlay it on your desk surface to activate specific life areas. For example, the far left corner is Wealth, the center is Health, and the far right is Creativity. Place objects that correspond to each area:
- Wealth (far left): A plant, a purple object, or a small money tree.
- Fame (far center): Red lamp, awards, or a photo of a role model.
- Love (far right): A pink or red object, a pair of items (like two crystals).
- Health (center): A bowl of fruit, a crystal, or a plant.
- Creativity (middle right): Art supplies, a sketchbook, or metal decor.
- Knowledge (near left): Books, a globe, or a lamp.
- Career (near center): A water bottle, black or blue item, or a career-related symbol.
- Helpful People (near right): A phone, a picture of friends/family, or a helpful object.

Common Desk Feng Shui Mistakes to Avoid
- Facing a wall: It blocks opportunities. If unavoidable, hang a landscape poster to create depth.
- Under-desk clutter: Shoes, boxes, or cables create stagnant energy. Use cable management solutions.
- Overhead beams: They create pressure. Avoid sitting under them or hang a crystal to deflect negative energy.
- Too many electronics: EMF can disrupt energy. Turn off devices when not in use and consider using desk power management.
- Ignoring the view: If you have a window, position your desk to see outside, but not directly in front of a window (which causes distraction).
